Totally Strings Adult Orchestra
SAM GILES - CONDUCTOR OF BOTH THE ADULT AND JUNIOR ORCHESTRAS
Sam read music at The University of Sheffield with first study violin and second study piano,
graduating with a BMus in 2013. Sam currently teaches 1-2-1 piano lessons in the private
sector and for 7 years, until Christmas last year, was a Music Leader for Leicestershire Music
(formerly known as ‘Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service (LSMS)’ or ‘Leicestershire Arts’).
This involved teaching whole class mixed strings (violin/viola/cello) and ukulele and
before this he also worked for Nottinghamshire music service teaching whole class and 1-
2-1 violin lessons.
Sam conducts Strictly Strings, one of the Saturday morning orchestras for
Leicestershire Music, which is aimed at young orchestral string players between Grade 1 and
Grade 4 level. Sam is also a member of the first violins in The Bardi Symphony Orchestra
who perform regularly at DeMontfort Hall. Sam really enjoyed the collaboration between
Strictly Strings and Totally Strings at the Highcross Shopping Centre back in June and he is
very much looking forward to conducting Totally Strings from this September.
Sam is a keen accompanist and plays piano weekly for choirs in Newtown Linford and
Lutterworth as well as various choral and instrumental projects for Leicestershire Music.
Sam also provides piano accompaniment for instrumental and vocal exams. Since January
2022, Sam has been playing the organ and this September he will start his organ scholarship
which was awarded to him earlier this year. Sam plays the organ weekly at church services
for All Saints’ in Newtown Linford and plays for weddings and funerals in the area too.
